Continuing on after my first video of highway 1093 we are now along the edge of the mountains between Thailand and Laos at around 1,000M. Heading north means Laos is to your right and Thailand to the left. The road goes along the Thai side and there are no views of Laos as such unless you climb/hike up to a higher vantage point but looking to your left affords fantastic views of mountainous northern Thailand.
I highly recommend staying somewhere along this highway to enjoy the area without the pressure of getting somewhere. I went mid December and finding a place was easy however be aware over Christmas and New year and probably other Thai national holidays it will likely be booked out. There are also camp grounds but it can be cold up here especially in cool season so be prepared.
Map of the route:
Ride carefully and always within your ability. The video shows speed (it is not completely accurate and has some inconsistencies), elevation graph, longitude and latitude, time and date, distance along the route and a squiggly line representing the road with a dot showing the current location. This video was shot in December 2014 and roads in Thailand do change over the years, a once pristine section of tarmac can degrade and likewise a bad section can be resurfaced and become as smooth as silk!
