Over the last couple of months I have recorded a load of POV bikes videos from recent travels. I have previously made many POV videos from Thailand bike trips and they are catalogued in a somewhat OCD way under “Roads of Thailand“. Now I can populate “Roads of NZ“!
Highway 2 runs most of the way up the North Island from Wellington, joining/merging into Highway 1 south of Auckland. The difference to Highway 1, that also runs Wellington to Auckland, is that Highway 2 is far more interesting as works the eastern part of the North Island passing through more interesting and varied landscapes and the towns of Masterton, Hastings, Napier, Gisborne, Opotiki, Whakatane and Tauranga. This video is of Waioeka Gorge, between Opotiki and Gisborne. It is close to home for aimless jaunts for a few hours, so I know it well. It is a lovely stretch that invites a solid concentrated ride when you can get into a rhythm (hammer hammer JL99!) with minimal traffic. Or just meander along, whatever you fancy…
More about Waioeka Gorge from the Department of Conversation website.
These are simply POV videos from the front of my bike using an ageing Garmin VIRB. I post them as I usually spend ages on Google Maps trying to work out if a road is bike friendly/interesting when preparing a trip and these POV videos help in that process. I offer up to fellow bikers and travellers alike. I don’t expect many will watch from start to finish but dip in to get a idea of the road and sceneary!
Ride carefully and always within your ability. The video shows elevation graph, longitude and latitude, distance along the route and a squiggly line representing the road with a dot showing the current location. This video was shot in October 2020 (late Autumn in NZ) and roads do change over the seasons and with age.
